Peterloon
Peterloon
For this
month’s campout, we went to Peterloon. Peterloon is the Dan Beard Council’s
council jamboree, and the longest running one in the world. Held at Cub Scout
Adventure World, part of the Dan Beard Scout Reservation, thousands of people
come to Peterloon when it is held every two years. Scouts from troops near and
far come to learn, have fun, and explore.
When our troop
got there, it was pretty messy. It was steadily raining, and the ground was so
muddy that cars, vans, and trucks were getting stuck on the roads, with their
tires spinning and spraying mud all over. In fact, Scouts were getting stuck,
too. After a while of sloshing and trudging the flat but treacherous road to
Sub Camp 5, we found our campsite and got to work. We unloaded the trailer, put
up pop-up shelters, set up patrol boxes, and set up our tents. After that was
done, everyone had some time to look around and get settled in.
Saturday
morning, we got up, ate breakfast, and were on our way to explore. There were
booths with raffles, free stuff, learning experiences, and all kinds of things.
In the field in front of the castle, there were many kinds of games, a
helicopter, and more cool stuff. There was also a shelter where Scouts could
weld, work with pipes, and learn about electricity. They even got merit badge
requirements signed off! There was rifle shooting, paintball shooting, archery,
black powder shooting, and even bullwhipping! Not to even mention trading
posts, a Scout gear store, and pizza, BBQ, chili, and ice cream vendors. It was
everything a Scout could want or imagine!
Finally,
dinner time came, and the festivities ended. But after dinner, there was a
troop football game, a live show, and more free time. So after even more fun,
everybody went to bed. Sunday morning wasn’t as open or festive as the day
before. Scouts across camp packed their gear, tents, and troop equipment so
they could leave. When our troop was done eating and packing, we made the
sloshy trek back to the gate and left.
